Genome selection will be the backbone of Danish Genetics’ solid and reliable breeding programme, which is improved on an ongoing basis by geneticists and scientific teams at Roslin Technologies. This means that we secure the genetic value of the breeding animals and take the lead to promote breeding progress with vigour and clout. Genome selection is expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2018 based on Roslin Technologies’ knowledge of the latest developments in this area.

Our breeding animals get better and better thanks to leading technology

Roslin Technologies is Europe’s leading expert in genome selection. Genome selection is an extremely effective tool to ensure breeding progress through selection of the best breeding candidates. We use knowledge of the DNA markers of the different breeding animals to more accurately predict the likelihood that an animal will pass on a particular trait. And based on the DNA markers we determine the breeding value of each animal in relation to the different traits.

This provides a good basis for deciding which breeding animals to select from breeding herds to create the future generation which will produce the best genetic results in terms of the desired traits.

 

Breeding is a science

Danish Genetics carries out extensive breeding work in close collaboration with some of Denmark’s most skilled and experienced breeders. In the process we gather large amounts of data from a large genetic population across our three breeds: Landrace, Yorkshire and Duroc. All the data is analysed and processed by Roslin Technologies to ensure our genetics and breeding animals remain world-class.

The success of a breeding programme depends not only on the programme itself but also on the breeding targets you set yourself. We want to continuously improve the breeding targets to maximise our customers’ profit from pig production. We therefore analyse our breeding data on an ongoing basis and compare the data with market surveys to determine whether future breeding targets should be adjusted and whether there is evidence to support the introduction of completely new breeding targets for the benefit of our customers’ pig production.

Our strong genetic population and the traits we have targeted in our breeding constitute the foundation for our work. This includes aspects such as growth rate, feed utilisation, the birth of live piglets, meat percentage and strength. However, as part of the extensive development work we have commenced in collaboration with Roslin Technologies, we analyse the traits and our breeding targets to determine, in collaboration with our customers, what new traits would increase our customers’ profits from breeding.

Health has top priority

Optimal production and breeding requires that the breeding animals are in good health. Therefore, health status has top priority for all Danish Genetics’ business partners.

Exceptionally, Danish Genetics is the only company in Denmark to make it a requirement that their breeding programme and the associated AI programme must be 100% PRRS-negative.

This means that all herds in Danish Genetics are guaranteed to be PRRS-negative and that all boars at our AI stations come from PRRS-negative breeding herds.

This makes Danish Genetics a market leader in terms of health and guarantees the customers that the semen they purchase comes exclusively from PRRS-negative boars.

All herds under Danish Genetics are approved SPF SUS herds and are part of the unique Danish SPF SUS health programme.

The Danish SPF SUS system was established in 1971 and is one of the world’s leading health systems. The system is based on fixed rules for protection against infection, health control and pig transport.
